    No spy chips, thank you.

    http://spychips.com

I saw that website, and laughed.

    "Wal-Mart is embedding RFID's In clothing ZOMG1984"

Those RFIDs are not secret government alien probes, they are made by sensormatic, are destroyed at point of sale (those demagnatizers, the bzzh sound is the RFID being scrambled), and only used if you walk out the door with something unpaid. Even then, it's not a GPS mega sensor that's tracking your every move, it just reacts with the sensors at the door to set off an alarm.

I'm in 3-2 and I havent found it to be difficult what so ever. Some parts require more thinking than others, but its not that bad once you learn to use all your "pixls" wisely...

Are you people seriously applauding this? What a waste of our tax dollars!! I do contracts with the Navy every single day and I know that the technology that they have will not be benefited by the use of iPad/iPod/iPhone.

You do contracts everyday with the Navy? This is the Army!

I am a major Apple fan-boy but I haven't bought movies from iTunes for a couple reasons.
    1) I like the special features on DVDs, and I doubt apple is offering alternate soundtracks, subtitles, director's comments, etc. with the Apple movie offerings.
    2) My daughters like taking a DVD with them to their grandparents house. Unless we centralize Apple downloaded movies at my house and equip my kids with video iPods, the Apple movie sale solution is not a very portable option.

Don't get me wrong, one day I'll probably buy a movie from Apple, but at this time, I'll pay a $5-$10 premium for portability.
I do buy TV shows from iTunes, but I don't expect extra features with TV shows.

As other posters have have suggested, even if "Johnny Lunch-Pail" isn't interested in the benefits in physical media I list above, he probably won't have the bandwidth to download the movies at any reasonable speed. How much time does it take to save $5?
"Instant gratification" of iTunes movies is going to be painfully slow on most peeps DSL.

I'm surprised the folks at Target and Walmart haven't figured this out. Maybe the execs making all the fuss assume that their shoppers have the same high-end systems that they have?

I would assume any impact to DVD sales will be incremental, and T&W should be able to adjust their business model to this, adjusting retail space accordingly.

Omg with no laptop updates, I'd like to watch as Apple's laptop sales tumble. Already the Apple Store dropped their MacBook shipping days down to 3-5 days (nobody wants it).

All 5G iPods with upgraded firmware to 1.2 can play the iTS movies just fine.
    ?????????
I can display a 10,000 x 8.000 pixel picture on an iPod if I throw away 99% of the data as well. But why would you want to use such a huge file for no reason? Not only would it take up vast amounts of space, but you have to process all that "throwing away" info on the fly.

The new videos take longer for you to download, use more storage space on the iPod, require the iPod to downsample at playback, and cost Apple more bandwidth.

So why would Apple do all this if they weren't in fact planing to USE the new format on an iPod? Soem may say "it's for rregular Macs", but this size is too SMALL for to build a new standard for computers. So the only conclusion I can reach is that it has to be for a new iPod to come...

I doubt very much Macbook is getting updates at the same time Pro Models do. Thats not how Apple operates. First the pro models will be updated then that tech will show up months later in Macbook with some crippling like in the Gpu.

    What???
It probably depends on the specifics of the network you want to build, but overall, I always found it ridiculously easy to build a Mac OS network than a Windows one.
You may want to provide specific examples on how networking in OS X is 'insanely hard' as compared to Windows.

Even under Linux, it's easier than in Windows.

    it was something like this....

ES: I am telling you Steve, if you use Bing as the default search engine it will be a HUGE mistake. Google is now, hip, and happening and we both know about the quality (both laugh) of MS products. C'mon we both know what the right choice is.

SJ: Eric, this is business. As you guys expand to other areas you are stepping on our toes. And now you ask me for a "favor"? How about a good ol fashioned "horse-trade"? We use your search engine and you drop out of the portable electronics game? Your stuff can't compete with ours anyway and it is only a matter of time. (ES looks hurt). Eric, you know me, I call it the way I see it and the situation is what it is.

ES: I'll think about it. I have to talk to our biz guys coz they are the ones who keep wanting us to expand into other areas. They are young and cocky and one guy even proposed a Google brand refrigerator coz it would be "cool". (both laugh)

SJ: What do you think of Flash???
ES: You mean here? Right now??!!
    SJ: Yea

They both stand up, shed their clothes and run off wearing only their Nikes.

Being a billionaire means total freedom.......

Their mark is still valid, other tissues still can't call themselves "kleenex".

Correct. Wikipedia has a good list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_generic_and_genericized_trademarks) of generic (almost certainly no longer enforceable) trademarks and genericized (commonly used generically but regarded as defendable) trademarks.

    We're...not...normal?

    Image (http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/8018/airplane2shatner.jpg)

WHY THE HELL AREN'T I NOTIFIED ABOUT THESE THINGS?!? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHKd80asXy4)

No, we are not normal. The average person does not read message boards about electronic devices and the companies that build them. So, no, we are not normal. We are gadget geeks.

And I like being not normal in this way. Remember, it is never the normal people who change the world ;)

So I come to you this eve, asking advice to this extent:

How would one go about dating an Apple employee??

(of a local Apple store....not Apple corporate, perhaps it doesn't matter, I don't know)

    Did you try asking! :D

I thought it was revolutionary - the idea that you always start with a template and never with a blank document. I thought - wow, all these years and Microsoft didn't come up with this?

But after trying to use it, it was non-intuitive and I gave up after about 10 minutes.

Word does actually start with a template rather than a blank document. Its name is normal.dot and you can change it anyway you like (put some formatting, text, headers and footers on it ...) and save it. Its a template like any other Word template you can create or use.

I hope Lion will mark the end of DVD drives in all Macs ... they can be an additional option so that whoever needs one can pay for it - I don't have any need for it and Lion should be available as download and USB stick. I haven't bought any software on DVD in ages - I will always opt for downloads - DVD is a technology from the last century.

Hmm, something is wrong with my memory or math ... last time I checked the MacBook Air was the cheapest laptop from Apple and has the USB included - all the more expensive laptops have old fashioned DVDs.

I agree. The most problematic components in a computer in general are the mechanical ones, and at this point, the only mechanical component that most likely will never be removed is the fan. Mobile devices on the other hand have even done away with that. These are interesting times. I rarely ever use the optical drive anymore, in fact, I have not used it in months... There is simply no reason to. Virtually all software is available online via the mac app store or some site somewhere, and the only things i use the drive for anymore are OS restores from time machine. If Apple were to provide a restore partition with the default install of Lion, then that would be it. No more DVD drive.

OK, following on from my previous message... My 'issue' got 'escalated' and I spoke to someone higher up the AppleCare pecking order (a Frenchman). He said that there might be a problem with this firmware update and my machine's specs [my speculation - the brand of SuperDrive (Sony DW-D150A)? my processor (dual 3GHz)?]. He 'felt sure that I wouldn't be the only person worldwide having this problem' (didn't tell him about this thread or a similar one on Apple's own forums), and will get back to me within 48 hours having spoken to Apple Engineering to see if his theory holds true. Time will tell!

well i hope it's not from already mac owners buying intel macs. i hope the marketshare continues to increase

Apple retail store statistics imply that around 50% of folks purchasing a Mac are new to Mac. ...so new blood appears to be joining the platform.

The Consumerist reported (http://consumerist.com/2009/12/att-customer-service-new-york-city-is-not-ready-for-the-iphone.html) over the weekend that AT&T has quietly stopped offering online iPhone sales to customers located in the New York City market. Responding to a reader report, The Consumerist verified the extent of the issue:I went to the AT&T site to verify what Stephen said. Sure enough, the iPhone was available to zip codes in San Francisco and other major cities. It was not available to purchase for people living anywhere in New York City, or any of the suburban zip codes in Westchester County or northern New Jersey that I tried. There seems to be some confusion, however, over the cause of the move, with a customer service representative initially stating that "New York is not ready for the iPhone" and that it doesn't "have enough towers to handle the phone." Such an explanation, while a bit surprising, was not considered completely illogical, as New York City has been a common source of complaints from consumers regarding network performance, and AT&T has acknowledged (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/12/09/atandt-addressing-network-performance-in-manhattan-and-san-francisco-high-bandwidth-users/) that it is looking to improve service there.

Follow-up comments from AT&T, however, have cast doubt on that explanation, with an official response noting only that AT&T may "periodically modify [their] promotions and distribution channels." Other customer support representatives, such as those contacted by Gearlog (http://www.gearlog.com/2009/12/att_nixes_online_iphone_sales.php), have cited "increased fraudulent activity" from the area as the reason for removing online iPhone sales in the region.
